Flashback Friday: Pete Rock & CL Smooth

Pete Rock (Peter Phillips) & C.L. Smooth (Corey Penn) are a hip-hop duo from money earnin’ Mount Vernon, New York. The duo released two studio albums and one EP.

Their debut studio album, “Mecca and the Soul Brother “, released in 1992 contained their first number one rap single, “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)“. Which is also their best known song. That song was inspired by the death of their close friend Troy Dixon (better known as “Trouble” T. Roy of Heavy D & the Boyz) in 1990.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth also hit number one on the rap chart with the single, “Lots of Lovin‘”. But, the song, “Straighten It Out“, is probably better remembered than “Lots of Lovin‘” and peaked at number seven on the crap chart in 1992.

Pete Rock & CL Smooth broke up as a duo in 1995. After that CL Smooth released two solo albums and Pete Rock released three solo albums and produced several songs for different artists including CL Smooth. But, the two were on the outs with each other from about 1995 until about 2010 when they began to work together again as a duo on stage. It’s rumored that they are working on a studio album.

  1. Yes, Yes, Yes. I loved cut. And I was madly in love with Heavy D. I’m still mourning. But yes that was a great cut. wasn’t hip hop great then? What happen to the art form?

    • Heavy’s loss was tragic. He seemed like a quality guy and made some classic music.

As for rap; the target demographic changed in the early to mid 90’s. And it was all downhill from there.

  2. Yeah “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” is an ALL-TIME Classic Cut-n-Jam Though (No Doubt…)

I was watching EPMD Unsung Episode the other day and I FORGOT Just HOW MUCH I LUV Their Music… They was Heavy-Hitting MFers Though (YUPPP…)

      • They have Episodes on YouTube… I didn’t know ANYTHING about “Unsung” until My Twittah TL started talking about It (MmmHmmm….) So I went there to catch up on Episodes… Vesta, Con Funk Shun, David Ruffin, Tammie Terrell, The Marvelettes are just some of My Favorites #JustFYI
