The secret is out!

The secret is out; Beyoncé lip-synced the National Anthem at Monday’s Presidential Inauguration. A lot of people are seemingly surprised, some even outraged. Imagine that, being outraged because an entertainer entertained.

I’m not surprised nor outraged. For once I’ll defend Beyoncé. She made the right decision to lip-sync. After all Beyoncé is an entertainer, not a singer. For true singers it’s about the moment. How they feel at any given performance will dictate how they sing a particular song. How long to hold a note, when to use their upper or lower register, how much emotion and what kind of emotion to add.

But, for an entertainer it’s only about entertaining. Polishing the act and making sure that each performance is a perfect facsimile of the last and the next.

Beyoncé’s performances have no soul, no heart. Her performances are about perfect execution. Not perfect pitch or perfect emoting. Which is why she was right to lip-sync. And, she entertained the crowd yesterday. In that moment Beyoncé was perfect Beyoncé. She was an empty vessel delivering a song to entertain the masses.

Brava, Beyoncé!

What do you think about Beyoncé’s performance?

  1. You know, I’ll admit it, I’m a Beyonce fan. But I’m slowly starting to dislike her and her music for the reasons you wrote – a lack of soul or heart.

I don’t know why, but her inauguration performance left me especially cold, and that’s even before I knew she had lip-synced. The way she surveyed the crowd before she started singing, her smile, her performance – everything just seemed so… staged. There’s no life or light in her eyes, like she’s actually enjoying what she’s doing. I do believe you’re right, she’s an entertainer and not a true singer.

Also, seeing Beyonce on that day made me appreciate Kelly Clarkson even more. Now there’s a singer.

    • Hey, Aly. I think that Bey is a product made by her dad a long time ago. And although I don’t like her music I am starting to feel a little badly for her. Her entire life has been about being an entertainer. And she doesn’t seem to have the intellect to fight against those people, like her dad, that created this life for her. So, she just seems to keep doing what she’s always done very much like a robot.

  2. Val, you know you’re being too hard on Beyonce. Lol. She doesn’t have the horns to blow in the manner of Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, but that’s exactly why she’s an entertainer and not necessarily a singer. Which isn’t bad, cause she’s still making a name for herself. I honestly don’t see the outrage over her lip-synced anthem, especially after considering Whitney’s celebrated National anthem was also lip-synced.

  3. I don’t see the big deal, it’s not like she used someone else’s voice. She’s not the first person to do this and she won’t be the last.

I don’t even like to talk in the cold, much less throw one back like that. Should she have sang it live?!? Probably…….seriously, there are bigger fish to fry.

    • I agree to a point. That is, if this was about a real singer then I think there could be a real debate. But, Bey is not a great singer in the first place so no biggie.

      • Val I have always said, there are actors and there are movie stars. Movies stars are the same person, no matter what role they play. Actors become the character, movie stars just don’t have it in them.

    • @Reggie

“Movies stars are the same person, no matter what role they play.”

Yes! That’s a great comparison. That’s one of the things that turned me off about Beyonce’s performance. She brought too much… Beyonce-ness lol. The evening gown at 11:30 in the morning, the flashy jewelry – it’s like she thought it was all about HER that day, like she was at one of her own concerts. It was a little bizarre.

I would have appreciated her performance more if it were a little more subtle and tailored to suit the day. Instead, she was the same old Beyonce. And then to find out she was lip-syncing as well? It was all too much.

  4. I didn’t watch THIS PERFORMANCE but for the people saying “What’s The Big Deal”… From what I’ve been reading the MANY THAT ARE PISSED is because she Lip-Synced at the Presidential Inauguration (MmmHmm…)

Now if Y’all think that is KOOL then So Be It (It isn’t a Big Deal…)

Now I did FINALLY watch that NFL Press Conference (Which Btw was TOO LAME…) and She sounded OK… NOTHING Inspiring or Impressive or Noteworthy IMO

These Beyounce STANS are becoming even more ANNOYING THAN BEYOUNCE HERSELF #LMAOOOOO

    • “These Beyounce STANS are becoming even more ANNOYING THAN BEYOUNCE HERSELF #LMAOOOOO”

      So true! Lol.

That press conference proved to me that Bey has no one around her who really cares. Otherwise, they would have talked her out of doing it!
