Flashback Friday: Troop

Troop is a late 80s/ early 90s R&B group originally from Pasadena, California. TROOP is an acronym for “Total Respect Of Other People”. The five members were, Steve “Random” Russell, Allen McNeil, John Harreld, Rodney Benford and Reggie Warren.

The group has had five number one singles and ten top ten singles on the Billboard R&B Charts. They released five albums, which include three certified gold and one certified platinum album.

 Troop is most notable for a series of number one R&B hits, including two popular cover versions of songs such as “All I Do Is Think of You” and “Sweet November“, originally performed by, The Jackson 5 and The Deele respectively. They also had number-one hits with original songs such as “Mamacita” and “Spread My Wings”.

When people talk about the best R&B groups of the 80s/ 90s Troop is often forgotten, which is a shame because they were a very good group.

702 Info

The group 702 (named for the Las Vegas area code) was a trio and sometime quartet formed in 1994 consisting of twin sisters, Irish and Orish Grinstead, their sister LeMisha Grinstead and Kameelah Williams. They hailed from Las Vegas and met while attending Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts. Orish eventually left the group and passed away in 2008 at age 27. She suffered from kidney failure.

The group was discovered while singing in the lobby of Caesars Palace by comedian/ actor Sinbad. Soon after they met Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. Who took them in the studio to record.

702 released a total of three studio albums.

In 1996 they released their debut album, No Doubt, which included the hits, “Steelo“, “All I Want” and “Get It Together“.

In 1999 they released their second album, the self-titled, “702“. Which included the hit single, “Where My Girls At?“.

Their final album, Star, was released in 2003 and did not contain any hit songs.

702 never won any Grammy Awards but won a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award in 1997 for their album, No Doubt, for Best R&B/Soul Album of the Year .

702 Trivia: Band member Kameelah Williams has a child with singer Musiq Soulchild.
